Prison Break in Aceh; 113 Inmates Escape

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hundreds of inmates of the Banda Aceh City Class II-A Penitentiary escaped on Thursday, November 29. The Law and Human Rights Ministry`s Directorate General of Corrections spokesman Ade Kusmanto said that 113 prisoners fled at around escaped at around 18:00.
"They ran away before the mass evening prayer," Ade told Tempo on Friday, November 30.
Ade said the prison break started with some prisoners provoking other inmates to run away by breaking doors and windows.

"They fled by using tools around them such as weightlifting barbells made of cement," he said. There were also prisoners who reportedly had stolen prison guards' motorbikes.
According to Ade, the detainees also attacked guards. "So far there have been no reports of injuries," he said.
Ade said the police are currently chasing after and arresting the escaped prisoners. "Until this morning, 26 people have been arrested, thanks to the help of Aceh Regional Police officers," he said.
