Magnitude 6 Earthquake Damages 116 Houses in Lebak

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - According to official records, there were 116 houses in Lebak, Banten, that sustained damages following the 6.4 magnitude earthquake that shook the area today at 13:34 Indonesian Western Time.


Not long after the earthquake, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) revised their reports and stated that the earthquake was at magnitude 6.1.


The epicenter of the quake was at the 7.21 south latitude and 105.91 east longitude or at 81 kilometers west of Lebak.

“We can confirm that the damages have increased to 116 houses from the previous 105,” said Kaprawi who acts as the Head of Lebak Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD). The BPBD has also opened a disaster emergency post, however, the agency has not received reports of casualties.


Lebak District is mapped by the agency as an area prone to tectonic earthquakes since it is located on the southern coastline.

Meanwhile in Cianjur, West Java, it is reported that eight high school students at Tanggeung Sub-District were injured by falling debris. “Six students were severely injured and two others sustained minor injuries to their head after being hit by falling debris,” said Abdurahman, Tanggeung District Head of Security and Public Order.
