TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bank Indonesia (BI) transformation center program head Onny Widjanarko said inter-bank transaction charges are expected to decline in the near future.

“The amount of the decline will be similar to the decline in transaction fees charged by state-owned banks,” Onny said yesterday, Dec. 5.

BI, Onny added, has regulated the merchant discount rate for transactions using debit cards. Bankers are also expected to adjust the tariff following the implementation of the National Payment Gateway (GPN).

According to Onny, the central bank will issue a regulation on the transaction fee cut if the policy remains unrealized for a certain period of time.

“For the time being, it will not be regulated. But the regulation will be issued when necessary in order to ensure the tariff cut,” he said.

Onny explained that the inter-bank transaction charges would decline as a result of the cost-sharing scheme related to the improvement of the payment gateway infrastructures.

Currently, state-owned banks charged customers with Rp4,000 per transaction conducted at ATM Link. The charge has declined by Rp1,500 from Rp6,000 per transaction. Meanwhile, no fees are charged for money withdrawal or account balance checking.
