Anies Baswedan Comment on Street Vendors Request to Use Sidewalk

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A fish vendor called Ridwan, 33, and his friends met Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan on November 23 asking for permission to run their business on the sidewalks of Jatinegara Bird Market, East Jakarta.
Ridwan said that he and his friends have stopped running their business since August after then Jakarta governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat launched the so-called Bulan Tertib Trotoar, a program designed to crack down on street vendors congesting sidewalks.
Ridwan asked Anies Baswedan to allow street vendors to return to the sidewalks. There are around 30 street vendors who rely on sidewalks to make a living. They have been running the business for 25 years. After being banned from sidewalks, they are now unemployed as the government does not provide any alternatives. “I sell fish, some sell birds. We want a solution,” he said.
Anies Baswedan did not specifically reject the request. “I’ll think about it because [sidewalks] are for walkers, Sir,” he said. “We will see. But I'm not promising anything.”
