TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Government through the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs is currently revising its Presidential Decree on cyber and national encryption agency.

Minister Wiranto stated the revision is important in order to avoid overlapping authorities. He said that cyber activities have long-existed in Indonesia and has been practiced by many state agencies which have different tasks and functions.

The main task of the Cyber and National Encryption Agency (BSSN) is to coordinate and manage numerous ongoing cyber activities in order to have a clear regulation to strengthen the existence. “If we let them go individually, unfavorable things will happen,” said Wiranto.

Wiranto said that he has no plans on appointing someone to take the position as BSSN chairman because it will greatly depend on the content of the Presidential Decree. Although, he continued, that the agency must be led by a person that is qualified and competent in the specific area of expertise.

President Joko Widodo has already ratified Presidential Decree No. 53/2017 on cyber and national encryption agency on May 19. The decree states that BSSN is a non-ministry government agency and will be under the responsibility of the president.
