50 Artists to Enliven Jakarta Biennale 2017

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Some 50 artists will enliven Jakarta Biennale 2017 following a selection process by the organizer.


The biennial event titled ‘JIWA: Jakarta Biennale 2017’ will be unveiled at Gudang Sarinah Ekosistem on November 4. The full line up of artist to join the event will be announced in September.


The Jakarta Biennale Foundation and a curator team comprising Melati Suryodarmono (Artistic Director), Annisa Gultom, Hendro Wiyanto, Philippe Pirotte and Vit Havranek have conducted a series of curatorial research. They have visited cities both at home and abroad and met artists.

Biennale 2017 will adopt the concept of ‘JIWA’ (soul) that can be construed as lifedata-style, energy, spirit, which substantially drives individuals, collectivity, the community, objects and nature, that will be presented in various works of arts in a wide range of medium.


“Through JIWA: Jakarta Biennale 2017, [visitors] can observe various relations, provoke sensibility, feelings and enrich our intellectual horizon,” Artistic Director Melati Suryodarmono said in a press release received by Tempo.


The artists to feature in the biennial event include: Abdi Karya (Indonesia), Afrizal Malna (Indonesia), Alastair McLennan (Northern Ireland), Ali Al-Fatlawi & Wathiq Al-Ameri (Switzerland), Aliansyah Caniago (Indonesia), Arin Rungjang (Thailand), Chiharu Shiota (Japan/Germany), Choy Ka Fai (Singapore), Darlane Litaay (Indonesia), Dineo Seshee Bopape (South Africa), Dolorosa Sinaga (Indonesia), Eva Kotátková (Czech Republic), Gabriela Golder (Argentine), Hanafi (Indonesia), I Made Djirna (Indonesia), Imhathai Suwatthanasilp (Thailand), Jason Lim (Singapore), Karrabing Film Collective (Australia), Keisuke Takahashi (Japan), Kiri Dalena (the Philippines), Luc Tuymans (Belgium), Marintan Sirait (Indonesia), Rama Surya (Indonesia), Ratu Saraswati (Indonesia), Robert Zhao (Singapore), Semsar Siahaan (Indonesia), Siti Adiyati (Indonesia), Vasil Artamonov & Alexey Klyuykov (Czech Republic), Willem de Rooij (the Netherlands), Wukir Suryadi (Indonesia), Yola Yulfianti (Indonesia).


Jakarta Biennale 2017 is slated to be held mainly at Gudang Sarinah Ekosistem in Pancoran, South Jakarta. But the lead up to the event will also be held at Jakarta History Museum, Fine Art and Ceramics Museum and Wayang Museum, among others.


Jakarta Biennale 2017 will be open to the public from November 4 to December 11.
