Communications and Information Minister Rudiantara is planning to ban social media platforms and websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube over radical contents.

“We have called on [social media] platforms to close accounts containing radical contents throughout 2016 and 2017 but only 50 percent [of the request] was met. It’s very disappointing,” Rudiantara said today after attending an event on anti-radicalism at Padjadjaran University in Bandung.

Rudi has urged social media platforms to make improvements. Otherwise, he will consider banning them. He explained that they have been reluctant to close the accounts because they would have to take the issue to court in their country of establishment.

“But they are running their business here. The advertisement also came from here. Therefore, they need to abide by the applicable regulation here,” he said.
