TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Yogyakarta Governor Sultan Hamengkubuwono X has agreed to limit the number of online-based taxis operating in the city.

"Limitation is needed. Yogyakarta is a small area, we don't need too many [taxis]," the Sultan said in Yogyakarta on Tuesday, April 4, 2017.

The Sultan, however, is yet to specify the ideal number of online-based taxis to be regulated in the gubernatorial regulations.

"An agreement must be reached [with taxi companies], whether or not [the number of] additional taxis is proportional," the Sultan said.

The Sultan said that Yogyakarta provincial government is preparing a gubernatorial regulation based on the Transportation Ministry's Regulation No. 32/2016, which regulates non-conventional transportation services.

Earlier, the Land Transportation Organization (Organda) of Yogyakarta has called for a strict regulation to limit the number of online-based taxis in the area to a maximum of 10 percent of the total number of conventional taxis.

Yogyakarta Gubernatorial Regulation No. 86/2014 stipulates that the number of taxis in the city is limited to 1,050 units, comprising of 1,000 regular taxis and 50 premium taxis.

Yogyakarta Organda chairman Agus Adrianto, said that conventional taxi occupancy rate has dropped from 65 percent to 35 percent following the introduction of online-based taxis.
