Saudi Lifts Ban on Chicken Imports from the United States
Kamis, 1 Januari 1970 07:00 WIB
TEMPO.CO , Jakarta - Saudi Arabia said that it has revoked the temporary ban on chicken import from 15 states in the US on Monday, August 22, 2016. The ban was lifted following the country’s success in mitigating the spread of Avian Influenza.
According to a report from Xinhua , the ban was imposed back in 2015, and also applies for eggs and other poultry products. However, cooked foods and products proven to be safe from the virus were exempted from the ban, according to a statement by Saudi’s Food and Drug Authority.
The Avian Influenza virus (H5N1), is a highly pathogenic virus, and had caused a serious outbreak in the Middle East and parts of Asia. The first human to be infected with the disease was recorded in Hong Kong in 1997.
