TEMPO.CO, Jakarta-President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has officially appointed National Counter Terrorism Agency head Comr. Gen. Tito Karnavian as the sole candidate to sit at the National Police chief post.

During his visit to Tempo on Friday, June 17, 2016, Tito promised that he would conduct a reform in the law enforcer institution, since a survey showed that public’s trust in the National Police is currently low.

According to Tito, internal reform must be conducted to improve public’s trust by promoting professionalism in law enforcement and maintaining the relationship between police and public.

“The President wants public’s trust in police improved,” he said.

Earlier, President Jokowi revealed that he appointed Tito as the National Police chief for his capability and intelligence. According to Jokowi, Tito is capable of maintaining good relationship with other law enforcers. The President hopes that Tito will be able to improve police professionalism in waging wars against drugs, terrorism and corruption.

“I believe that he [Tito] is highly competent,” Jokowi added.

Upon House’s approval, Tito will replace Gen. Badrodin Haiti who will retire in the near future. Earlier, potential names to be appointed as the National Police chief were National Police deputy chief Budi Gunawan, National Narcotics Agency (BNN) head Budi Waseso, and Irwasum Dwi Priyatno.
