TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Starting 2016, the government is set to revoke electricity subsidy for 20 million low capacity subscribers of state-owned electricity company PT. PLN, officials said Friday, September 4.
Director General of Electricity of the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry Jarman said that the number of households that currently enjoy subsidized electricity, or 450 VA and 900 VA subscription categories, still reach around 46 million subscribers.
However, based on the calculation of the National Team for Alleviating Poverty (TNP2K), the number of poor households only reaches around 24 – 25 million households. The discrepancy will be encouraged to upgrade to non-subsidized subscriptions.
“So, there are around 20 million subscribers who are not supposed to enjoy the subsidy,” Jarman said on Friday.
Therefore, he added, the government will urge 20 million PLN subscribers using 450 VA and 900 VA to move to the category that uses non-subsidized electricity, or to upgrade to 1,300 VA.
