Garuda Halts Denpasar-Brisbane Route

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Amid the tragedy engulfing the Indonesian aviation industry, national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia has decided to halt the flights serving the Denpasar-Brisbane route. The general manager of PT Garuda Indonesia of Denpasar branch, Syamsudin YS, on said Monday, January 12, 2015, that the route was not lucrative.
Although Garuda serves only one flight a day, the airline could not achieve the targeted number of passengers.
Garuda will stop the flight service beginning February 1, 2015. Garuda has begun disseminating information about the flight route removal to travel agents and passengers. Those who have booked the tickets will be fully-reimbursed or given alternative tickets to Sydney or Melbourne and then to Denpasar.
Syamsuddin dismissed speculations the halt was related to the flight-route permit issues raised by the Transportation Ministry. Garuda’s flight routes had been declared to be valid by the Transportation Ministry.
“It has nothing to do [with the flight-route permit issues]. It’s just a business decision,” he said.
