Sunda Strait Bridge Cancelled, Merak Port to be Expanded

TEMPO.CO, Serang - Acting Governor of Banten Rano Karno, requested the central government to expand Merak Harbor if the Sunda Straight Bridge mega-project is to be cancelled. According to Rano, the Sunda Straight Bridge project must be replaced with other infrastructure project in order to accommodate the flow of goods between Java and Sumatra island.
"Merak port should be expanded due to its incapability to overcome congestion," Rano said in a statement.
According to Rano, up until now, the Provincial Government of Banten have not receive any information on the cancellation of the Sunda Straight Bridge project. "This is just a rumor, we will communicate with the central government to discuss this issue," Rano said.
Yanus Lentanga, General Manager of state-owned ferry and crossing services company ASDP Indonesian for the Merak branch, welcomed the government's plan to improve the shipping sector, especially strait crossings services.
According to Yanus, the improvement of Sunda Strait crossing service is in accordance with public demands.
