TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - For over five years, the government claimed to have shut down one million websites containing pornographic materials. Director General of IT App at the Ministry of Telecommunication and Informatics Bambang Heru Tjahjono, said that pornographic websites are the source of cyber crime in Indonesia. "Malware breaches from porn sites, damaging the device and retrieving data," he said.
"Usually, [the malware] attacks banking data, government strategic data, and credit cards," he said.
On the notion of cyber crime, Heru said that pepetrators often target government sites. Out of the total number of cyber attacks this year, 70 percent of them was aimed at government websites. The rest often targets social media.
Head of the Sharing Vision, an information technology consulting company, Dimitri Mahayana, said that cyber crime in Indonesia has become a serious issue. Indonesia sits on top of the list of countries with the highest number of cyber attacks in 2013 with 42,000 attacks per day.
Sharing Vision's survey on social media users revealed that 22 percent of users have encountered fake accounts while 13 percent claimed to have had their accounts hacked, while the other 10 percent claimed that their accounts were stolen.
"As the source of cyber crime, Indonesia is on top of other nations," Dimitri said.
