TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Home Affairs Minister Gamawan Fauzi said the government could disband problematic mass organizations, but it should be carried out accordingly to the mechanism regulated in Law No. 17/2013 about Mass Organization.

“Through the Justice and Human Rights Ministry first, and then the ministry will report to the court to impose sanctions based on police records,” said Gamawan on Friday.

According to Gamawan, anyone—not just his ministry—could file a complaint against any mass organization to the Justice and Human Rights Ministry. The sanctions, he added, were admonition, suspension and disbandment.

Gamawan's statement was in response to Acting Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama's plans to disband hard-line group the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) in the wake of its violent rally last week.

FPI members staged a protest on Friday last week in front of the Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD DKI Jakarta) building to reject Ahok's upcoming inauguration as the capital's ruler.
