Air Pollution Index in Makassar Still High

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of South Sulawesi Environment Agency (BLHD), Hasbi Nur reported that air pollution in Makassar is still high up to 87.83. Hasbi believes that the condition was due to the increase of vehicles populations.
"Although the index is decreasing compared to 91.34 in 2013, it is still high according to the province standard," Hasbi said on Thursday.
The oxygen level in the down town continues to be low because of the increasing smoke level. Data from BLHD shows that the total number of two-wheeled motor vehicles in South Sulawesi in 2013 reached 2,271,894 units, while four-wheeled vehicles reached 366,049 units.
If the government do not take immediate action, Hasbi said, the CO2 pollution will reach up to 48.190.134 ton CO2 eq by 2020. In view of this concern, BLHD is preparing an action plan to reduce green house effects on the city. This action plan has been casted into Governor's Regulation No. 59/2012.
"We are committed to reduce green house effects up to 22.28 percent," Hasbi continued.
Environmental observer Anwar Lasapa backed the information, adding that lack of the green open space in Makassar also contributes to the high level air pollution.
