TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Center for Environmental Research and Clean Technology of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is developing membrane technology that utilizes nanotechnology to separate air and water from pollution.

“Membrane technology has the potential to be used to purify water and air pollution containing particles, bioaerosols, and toxins,” BRIN researcher Muhammad Nasir said in a press statement on Thursday, October 19, 2023.

Membrane technology uses nanotechnology consisting of nanofibers of less than 100 nanometers and membranes that are selective layers to overcome water and air pollution.

The nanomaterial components in composites can be designed in such a way that nanofiber membranes can be applied according to specific functions.

According to the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the world is facing several environmental problems, including global warming, air pollution, agricultural waste, and water pollution.

A professor at Syiah Kuala University Banda Aceh, Saiful, said membrane technology is an interesting technology to develop. The membrane, which is a semi-permeable material, can be adjusted according to the user's needs.

In addition, membrane technology can also be used to remove heavy metal contaminants in water which, can cause health problems and even death, if consumed.

“The use of membranes in the field of environmental science and health has been widely used, such as water purification, support of human internal organs, and production of masks,” Saiful said.
