TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Director General of Animal Husbandry and Health of the Ministry of Agriculture, Syukur Iwantoro, said that the ministry is trying out a subsidy of animal feed for local breeders. "If this tryout is successful, we are going to file a proposal for animal feed subsidy next year," he said at Ministry of Agriculture office, Jakarta, Friday, August 30, 2013.

Syukur said that the amount of the subsidy is small; for one cattle group, it is only Rp100,000,000. The subsidy was given to 100 cattle groups in West Java, Central Java, and East Java. Each group consists of 20 people.

Syukur further said that the subsidy of animal feed is not directly channeled to the breeders but through cooperatives instead. He added that with this animal feed subsidy in the cooperatives, the price of animal feed would be less expensive. "Should this program be successful, the breeders will shoulder less burdens," he said.

Syukur also said that the animal feed subsidy aims to increase the number of live cattle in Indonesia. One of the measures to increase the population of live cattle is the subsidy to keep female live cattle productive.
