TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State media reports that some 300,000 people in eastern China have fled their homes as Typhoon Soulik moves inland amid warnings of floods and landslides. Winds of 119 km/hour hit the coastal Fujian Province, said China's National Meteorological Centre.

Meanwhile, in Fujian and Zhejiang, another Chinese coastal province, flights and train services were cancelled and fishing boats called back to shore. The Chinese government has prepared disaster mitigation materials and emergency response teams as typhoon Soulik hits the nation. As many as 5,500 military men were deployed to help the evacuation and rescue process due to the storm.

Soulik first hit Taiwan causing two deaths, and injuring 104 others. The typhoon has destroyed 520,000 homes, caused landslides, and cancelled 350 flights and 31,000 ships set to sail. Waves 10 meters high trashed into Ningde city when the waves met Fujian Province last Saturday afternoon. News media Xinhua estimates the damages caused by this typhoon have reached US$34 million.
