Taliban Gun Down Foreign Tourists

TEMPO.CO, Islamabad – A group of armed personnel assaulted a mountaineering base camp located in Nanga Parbad, the ninth highest Himalayan Checkpoint in Pakistan, killing 10 people, nine of which were foreign tourists.
Ali Sher, a senior police officer of the Gilgit Baltistan Province, told Reuters that they have not been able to identify the victims. He claimed that some of them were from China. Meanwhile, a report released by BBC mentioned that the victims were three Chinese, one Russian, five Ukrainians, and a Pakistani guide.
Authorities were having a difficult time to evacuate the victims, because the crime occurred in a remote area that has no transportation infrastructure, forcing the evacuation team to utilize helicopters.
The shooting was the first incident to foreign citizens that occurred in the area. A spokesman for the Tehrik-e-Taliban claimed that his group was responsible for the attack, T^he spokesman also stated that the attack was a retaliation for the death of one of their leaders Waliur Rehman, in a drone attack last May.
