TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil has been officially declared a prospective candidate for the upcoming Jakarta gubernatorial election. Ridwan Kamil, a Golkar Party cadre, will run in the election alongside a Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) member, Suswono.

Ridwan Kamil-Suswono duo is backed by Onward Indonesia Coalition (KIM) Plus, a combination of the Onward Indonesia Coalition that supported President-elect Prabowo Subianto in the recent presidential election, and several other parties. The coalition members are Gerindra Party, PSI, the Democratic Party, the Golkar Party, PAN, the Garuda Party, and the Gelora Party.

Additionally, the coalition also includes non-Onward Indonesia Coalition members; the United Development Party (PPP), the National Awakening Party (PKB), the NasDem Party, the Perindo Party, and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS).

Secretary General of Gerindra Party Ahmad Muzani led the declaration of support. "We, the political parties part of the Coalition of the New Jakarta for Advanced Jakarta, declare that we are nominating Muhammad Ridwan Kamil as a candidate for governor and Suswono as a candidate for deputy governor in the 2024 Jakarta regional head election," said Muzani at the Sultan Hotel, Jakarta, on Monday, August 19, 2024. Both Ridwan Kamil and Suswono attended the declaration.

Vice President-elect Gibran Rakabuming Raka was also present at today’s declaration of support.

Ridwan Kamil and Suswono will register as gubernatorial candidate pair at the General Elections Commission or KPU on August 27-29, 2024.

To nominate a candidate, a threshold of 20 percent of DPRD seats must be met. The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle or PDIP is the only party with seats in the Jakarta DPRD outside the KIM Plus coalition, and it would fail to reach the threshold if the KIM Plus coalition stands to registration day.

Ridwan Kamil-Suswono also faces the possibility of running against an ‘empty box’ or an independent candidate at the Jakarta gubernatorial election.
