TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Joko Widodo or Jokowi has confirmed that there will be bonuses for athletes who win medals at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The bonus money will be Rp6 billion, an increase from the Rp5.5 billion that medalists received at the Tokyo 2020 Games.

Indonesia finished 39th in the medals table at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, with two gold medals and a bronze in speed climbing, weightlifting, and badminton.

"[The medalists] will be given bonuses whether they win gold or bronze," Jokowi said in the new capital Nusantara in East Kalimantan on Tuesday, August 13, as quoted in audio obtained by Tempo.

The two gold medals were won by climber Veddriq Leonardo and lifter Rizki Juniansyah, and the bronze was won by Gregoria Mariska Tunjung from badminton, the women's singles discipline.

"How much for the gold medal [won in the previous Olympics]? Rp5.5 billion? "This time it's Rp6 billion," Jokowi said after first asking Youth and Sports Minister Dito Ariotedjo, who accompanied him on a working visit to IKN.

For the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the government awarded gold medal winners Rp5.5 billion, silver medalists Rp2.5 billion, and bronze medalists Rp1.5 billion. Athletes who competed but didn't win medals also received a bonus of Rp100 million.

In Tokyo, Indonesia finished 55th with a collection of five medals, one gold, one silver and three bronze. The only gold came in the women's badminton doubles, won by Greysia Polii / Apriani Rahayu.
