TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi handed over the Social Forestry Decree and the Land Objects for Agrarian Reform (TORA) Decree to community representatives at the LIKE Festival at the Jakarta Convention Center on Friday, August 9, 2024.

The social forestry land covers 1.07 million hectares while the TORA Decree covers 43,000 hectares of land. Jokowi also handed over the decrees on people's oil palm plantations and environmental fund service certificates to the community.

The Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya said social forestry covers 15,879 hectares of customary forests. The government also handed over the decree on people’s oil palm replanting covering 37,000 hectares of land.

“Realization on social forestry reaches 8.018 million hectares thus far for 1.4 million households,” said Minister Siti Nurbaya at the festival today.

Siti said the government will strive to achieve the ideal 2.7 million hectares target for citizen forest management. This year’s social forestry was handed over to 138 Indigenous community groups.

After handing over the social forestry and TORA Decrees, President Jokowi emphasized the importance of collaboration between the government and citizens to protect the environment and overcome the effects of climate change in the country.

"If we cannot protect and maintain the environment, our quality of life would be the most affected, whether from illness, drought, and the pressure on food," said Jokowi. He also highlighted that the energy sector, mining, and forestry potentially have the biggest impact on the environment.
