TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has pledged financial incentives for Indonesian athletes who bag medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics. However, he could not yet confirm the specific amount.

“I’ve just learned about it and details will be discussed later. What’s clear is that bonuses are confirmed,” he said after attending the Like Festival at the Jakarta Convention Center, Central Jakarta, on Friday, August 9, 2024.

Indonesia’s Olympic standing has surged to 28th place with two gold and one bronze medals as of Thursday, August 8. Veddriq Leonardo clinched the first gold for the country in the men's speed rock climbing final on August 8, followed by Rizki Juniansyah’s gold in the men's 73-kilogram weightlifting. Meanwhile, Gregoria Mariska Tunjung presented a bronze medal in the women's singles badminton.

Based on the Olympics’ official site this morning, the United States still leads the medal count with 30 gold, 38 silver, and 35 bronze. China comes in second with 28 gold, 25 silver, and 19 bronze, followed by Australia with 18 gold, 14 silver, and 13 bronze. Host nation France is in the fourth spot with 14 gold, 18 silver, and 21 bronze.

In Southeast Asia, Indonesia's position is still below the Philippines which is ranked 25th with 2 gold and 2 bronze medals. Thailand trails behind Indonesia albeit having 6 medals as half of them are silver and the rest are 1 gold and 2 bronze.

President Jokowi expressed his pride and gratitude for the gold medals won by Veddriq Leonardo and Rizki Juniansyah. “The state appreciates this, and the people are overjoyed with this achievement,” he said.
