TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia saw a concerning rise in rape cases throughout 2022. The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) released a report titled "Criminal Statistics 2023", showing 1,443 reported cases of immoral crimes of rape, which increased by 23.9% compared to the previous year's 1,164 cases.

The data was compiled by BPS from reports submitted by Regional Police (Polda) offices across the country's 34 provinces. Among these provinces, Aceh holds the unfortunate distinction of having the highest number of reported rape cases in 2022, with 135 incidents. This represents a significant increase of 65 cases from the previous year at 70 cases.

In fact, the Aceh Sharia Court reported an even higher number of rape cases than the BPS data. The Aceh Human Rights Commission emphasized the need for prioritizing and ensuring the rights of victims.

Following Aceh, West Java ranks second with a total of 114 reported cases. This figure showcases a disturbing tripling of reported incidents from 37 in 2021. East Java sits in third place with 106 reported cases, also experiencing a significant rise from 51 cases in the previous year.

Here's a list of 10 Indonesian provinces with the highest number of reported rape cases in 2022, according to BPS:

1. Aceh: 135 cases

2. West Java: 114 cases

3. East Java: 106 cases

4. South Sulawesi: 101 cases

5. North Sumatra: 68 cases

6. Lampung: 61 cases

7. West Nusa Tenggara: 60 cases
