TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Joko Widodo or Jokowi said the Aceh-North Sumatra National Sports Games (PON) 2024 not only will produce the nation's best athletes but also the moment to strengthen the nation's fraternity.
The president conveyed the statement while inaugurating PON 2024 at Harapan Bangsa Stadium in Banda Aceh on Monday evening, September 9, 2024.
"PON is the platform to birth more of the nation's best athletes, more world record breakers, potential gold winners. No less important is that PON is the platform to strengthen our unity, our sense of fraternity as a nation,” he said.
He advised all athletes and contingents to uphold sportsmanship and fair play while participating in PON 2024.
"Let us all celebrate the National Games with a spirit of togetherness, with a spirit of sportsmanship and joy to carve out achievements that make the country proud," he remarked.
PON 2024 marks the first time the national multi-event sports event will be held in two provinces simultaneously, namely Aceh and North Sumatra.
A total of 65 sports, 87 disciplines, and 1,042 match numbers will be held in 20 districts/cities in Aceh and North Sumatra.
Four new regions, namely Southwest Papua, Papua Highlands, Central Papua, and South Papua will debut their athletes at PON, which will also be participated by the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) contingent.
