TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - The Yogyakarta Regional Government (DIY) has recently ramped up efforts to combat illegal mining activities across various districts and cities in the province, following public complaints and concerns raised on social media.

The illegal mining, particularly the C excavation, has become a major concern for DIY Governor Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X as some activities threaten the protected karst areas and residential areas, as seen in Gunungkidul Regency.

“We have currently closed four illegal mining locations – three in Gunungkidul Regency and one in Bantul Regency,” said Anna Rina Herbranti, Head of the DIY Public Works, Housing, and Mineral Resources Energy Agency (PUPESDM), on Wednesday, July 17.

Anna outlined that the three locations are in Gunungkidul Regency, spread across Serut and Rejosari Villages in Gedangsari District and Tancep Village in Ngawen District. The remaining one is in Bantul Regency's Sitimulyo Village, Piyungan District

Apart from these four locations, Anna said that her side had issued letters demanding a halt to illegal mining activities in 32 additional locations throughout DIY.

“Eight of these sites hold exploration permits, but the permitting process is incomplete,” she added.

Kulon Progo Regency tops the list of areas with illegal mining activities, with 15 locations identified. These activities primarily involve riverbed mining (13 points) and land-based excavations (2 points). Bantul Regency follows with 11 locations, while each Gunung Kidul and Sleman Regencies have 3 illegal mining spots on land.

Anna explained that field investigations revealed a number of parties carrying out mining activities only have permits from the Ministry of Investment/Investment Coordinating Board. These permits lack crucial environmental documents, raising concerns about potential ecological damage.

“We are not only stopping mining activities but also requiring mining companies to reclaim the land,” Anna said.

The crackdown extends beyond the immediate halt of mining activities. The authorities are requiring mining companies to restore the mined land, ensuring responsible practices and minimizing long-term environmental impact.

Earlier in July, Governor Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X directed a firm message to eradicate illegal mining in the region. He emphasized the role of district governments in monitoring and tackling illegal mining within their jurisdictions. He also reminded miners who already have permits to obey applicable regulations.
