Thailand's Hat Yai, Yogyakarta Among Cheapest Cities in Asia

TEMPO.CO, JakartaYogyakarta has been named the second most affordable destination in Asia for travelers in August and September, according to digital travel platform Agoda. Hat Yai in Thailand claimed the top spot.

Yogyakarta is one of the most visited cities in Indonesia. According to the 2023 data, the city received more than 7 million local and foreign tourists and offers an average room rate of US$38 (Rp593,000) per night, significantly lower than other Asian cities.

Meanwhile, Hat Yai boasts the lowest average room rate at US$36 (Rp561,000) per night.

Other budget-friendly destinations in Asia include Kuching, Malaysia which offers an average room rate of US$54, Siargao Island, Philippines (US$57), Da Lat, Vietnam (US$57), Narita, Japan (US$58), Goa, India (US$66), Taichung, Taiwan (US$96), and Busan, South Korea (US$113).

Agoda compiled the list by analyzing the average room rates for bookings made between June 15 and July 7, 2023, with stays scheduled between August 15 and September 30, 2023.

Exploring Hat Yai

Located in the southern region of Thailand near the Malaysian border, Hat Yai presents a blend of natural beauty and cultural experiences. Renowned for its Buddhist temples, including the renowned Hat Yai Nai or Wat Hat Yai Nai, the city provides a more affordable alternative to popular Thai destinations like Phuket and Bangkok.
