Indonesian Athletes Who Have Carried the Olympic Torch

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Olympic torch bearers are usually athletes representing various countries participating in the Summer Olympic Games. Indonesian athletes have also participated in the Olympic torch carriers or torch relay.

The Olympic torch flame is one of the symbols to start the Olympic Games opening. The torch flame will be carried in relay to its final destination in the stadium that hosts the Olympics.

Here are some Indonesian athletes who have participated in carrying the Olympic torch:

1. Rossy Pratiwi Dipoyanti, 1996 Atlanta Olympics

Launching from the official website of the Indonesian Olympic Committee, one of the Indonesian athletes who carried the Olympic torch was Rossy Pratiwi Dipoyanti at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Rossy once carried the flame of the Atlanta Olympic torch at the fun run torch relay shortly before the opening ceremony by running 500 meters representing Indonesia. He is an athlete from the table tennis sport who has twice represented Merah Putih at the Olympics, in 1992 in Barcelona and in 1996 in Atlanta.

He reached the round of 16 at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. In addition, he has also collected 13 gold pieces throughout the history of the SEA Games, having appeared at the Asian Games when he was in the second grade of junior high school.

2. Stephanie Handojo, London 2012 Olympics

Stephanie Handojo was chosen to represent Indonesia as the torchbearer for the 2012 London Olympics. Stephanie managed to set aside thousands of children in the world and was selected to be the 20 children who performed at the prestigious Olympic event.

Stephanie will carry the London Olympic torch for a distance of 300 meters, but the committee set 600 meters that must be shared with 10 other people starting from London Road, Cattle Market Road and ending at Old Market Square in the city center.

Stephanie became the first child with a disability to become a torchbearer for the world's biggest sporting event. Stephanie is an athlete from swimming. She won the 2011 Special Olympic Games gold medal in Athens in swimming.

3. Bambang Pamungkas, London Olympics 2012

Bambang Pamungkas has also been chosen as one of the representatives of the London 2012 Olympic torch bearers from among athletes.

Bambang Pamungkas, commonly known by his nickname Bepe, who once served as captain of the Jakarta soccer team Persija and the Indonesian national team, carried the torch in the city of Manchester.
