BMKG Records Two Earthquakes in East Luwu, Samosir Today

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency or BMKG reported two earthquakes today, Friday, July 12, 2024. The earthquakes recorded a magnitude of 3.8 in East Luwu, South Sulawesi, and a magnitude of 3.1 in Samosir, North Sumatra.

The earthquake in East Luwu occurred at around 04:43 a.m. local time, with the epicenter located 7 kilometers northeast of East Luwu. Originating on land, the quake had a depth of 5 kilometers and was experienced at Level III of the MMI scale, akin to trucks passing by.

Meanwhile, the earthquake in Samosir happened at 09:21 a.m. WIB (Western Indonesia Time). The epicenter was 7 kilometers southwest of Samosir, with a 3-kilometer depth inland.

The earthquake could be felt in Pangururan, a sub-district on the shores of Lake Toba in Samosir Regency, on the II-III MMI scale.

Earthquake Near the Sunda Strait?

Apart from the two earthquakes, BMKG through its account on social media also revealed, among other things, a magnitude 5 earthquake located 114 kilometers southwest of Sumur, Pandeglang, Banten. Recorded to have occurred at 05:18 a.m. WIB, the quake was 10 kilometers deep in the sea.

According to the shakemap, the epicenter was located between Sunda Strait and a subduction zone, in line with the southern tip of the Sumatran Fault. However, BMKG did not categorize it as a felt earthquake.
