TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported two earthquakes exceeding a magnitude of 5 that jolted eastern Indonesia on Tuesday, September 10, 2024.
The most recent quake struck the southern coast of Alor, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), at 12:11:07 WIB on Tuesday. The BMKG analysis revealed updated parameters indicating a magnitude of M5.0 for this seismic event.
The quake's epicenter was located at coordinates 8.88° South Latitude and 124.27° East Longitude, precisely in the sea 72 kilometers southwest of Alor, NTT, at a depth of 90 kilometers.
“Considering the location of the epicenter and hypocenter depth, the quake was a moderate tectonic earthquake caused by a subduction zone,” explained Daryono, Head of the BMKG's Earthquake and Tsunami Center, on Tuesday.
“Source mechanism analysis indicates that the quake had a thrust fault movement,” he added.
The tremor was felt in Soe with an intensity scale of II-III MMI, meaning it was felt distinctly indoors, similar to the sensation of a passing truck. Modeling results showed that this quake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.
As of 12:45 WIB, BMKG monitoring has not detected any aftershocks.
Earlier today, an earthquake shook the Talaud Islands, North Sulawesi, at 04:01:33 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). The analysis showed updated parameters indicating a magnitude of M5.3 for this seismic event.
The quake's epicenter was located at coordinates 4.34° North Latitude and 126.77° East Longitude, precisely on land in North Beo, Talaud Islands, at a depth of 90 kilometers.
“Considering the location of the epicenter and hypocenter depth, it was a moderate tectonic quake caused by crustal deformation activity. Source mechanism analysis indicates that the earthquake had an oblique thrust-fault movement,” said Daryono.
The quake caused shaking in North Beo and South Essang, Talaud Islands, with an intensity scale of II-III MMI.
The public is advised to remain calm and not be influenced by unverified information. “Avoid cracked or damaged buildings caused by the earthquake,” Daryono emphasized.
