BMKG Warns of Extreme Weather in West Java This Week

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecasts thunderstorms in most of West Java today, Monday, September 9, 2024. Similar warnings are issued for the next three days in the region.
The Head of BMKG Climatology Station, Rakhmat Prasetia, said several factors cause the formation of convective clouds in West Java this week. Sea surface temperatures in parts of Indonesia are still relatively warm. Equatorial Rossby waves are also expected to be active early to mid-next week.
“The atmospheric lability varies but is generally placed at low to medium labile,” Rakhmat said in a written statement on Sunday, September 8.
Thus, BMKG forecasts medium to heavy rainfall in most of West Java from September 9 to 12 but will cease during the weekend.
In detail, brief and heavy rainfall is expected in Bogor Regency and City; Bekasi Regency and City; Depok; Karawang; Purwakarta; Sukabumi Regency and City; Cianjur; Greater Bandung; Sumedang; Garut; Tasikmalaya Regency and City; Banjar; Ciamis; Majalengka; and Kuningan.
According to BMKG, rainfall is expected the next day in Bogor Regency and City; Depok; Bekasi Regency; Karawang; Subang; Purwakarta; Sukabumi Regency and City; Cianjur; Greater Bandung; Sumedang; Majalengka; Kuningan; Garut; Tasikmalaya Regency and City; Banjar; and Ciamis.
On Wednesday, September 11, local and brief thunderstorms are expected in Cianjur; Sukabumi Regency and City; Bogor Regency and City; Greater Bandung; Garut; Tasikmalaya Regency and City; and Purwakarta. As for Thursday, rainfall is expected in Depok; Bogor Regency and City; Bekasi Regency and City; and West Bandung Regency.
BMKG urges residents of West Java to be vigilant of the extreme weather. “Especially at the western part of West Java which will enter the transition period between dry to rainy season,” Rakhmat said.
