TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake hit the Banda Sea, Central Maluku, Maluku on July 2, 2024, at 09:46 a.m. WIB (Western Indonesia Time). The results of analysis by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) show that this earthquake had updated parameters of 5.4 magnitude.

Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, said the epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 6.34 degrees Southern Latitude and 130.24 degrees of Longitude East, 216 kilometers northwest of Tanimbar, Maluku, at a 1680-kilometer depth.

"Based on the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the quake was medium-sized due to rock deformation in the Banda subduction plate," said Daryono, in a written statement on Tuesday, July 2, 2024. According to Daryono, the earthquake had a strike-slip movement.

Based on the estimated shakemap, this earthquake caused shaking in Amahai, Central Maluku, the Babard Islands, and Dawelor Dawera, Southwest Maluku with an intensity scale of III MMI, akin to trucks passing by.

Daryono said there have been no reports of damage caused by the earthquake thus far. "The modeling results show this earthquake does not have the potential to cause a tsunami," he said.

As of 10:00 WIB, BMKG monitoring detected no aftershock activities. Daryono urged the residents to remain calm and avoid damaged structures.
