TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Sigit Widyawan, the brother-in-law of President Joko Widodo or Jokowi, currently serves as the Independent Commissioner of state lender PT Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI). He was first appointed to the position in 2018 and was reappointed in 2022 until 2025.

“I'm just fulfilling the mandate as the commissioner for supervisory affairs,” Sigit talked about his duties in a phone call with Tempo on Tuesday, June 11.

He did not deny that he had been appointed twice as independent commissioner of the BNI. However, he refused to talk further about his appointment.

Sigit and Jokowi have close familial ties. Sigit is married to Nining Roni Widyaningsih, Jokowi's cousin, and they have two children. Nining is the daughter of Miyono Suryo Sarjono, who is the eldest sister of Sujiatmi, Jokowi's mother. Miyono and Sujiatmi have another sibling, Setiawan Prasetya. They are the offspring of Wirorejo and Sani.

Miyono, who passed away on February 22, 2022, always supported Jokowi's political activities. His daughter, Nining, is an advisor of Kipasan Solo, which is a volunteer group that mobilizes support for the elected president and vice president, Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Jokowi’s eldest son.

BNI Corporate Secretary Okki Rushartomo confirmed that Sigit has been serving as an Independent Commissioner since March 20, 2018, following the 2018 Annual General Meeting of Shareholders. According to him, the appointment was made professionally. “By considering the competency, experience, professionalism, reputation, and independence of the prospective independent commissioner,” he said in a written message to Tempo on Tuesday, June 11.

Okky also said that Sigit had a qualified educational background, with a bachelor's degree in economics from Sebelas Maret State University and a master's degree in accounting from the University of Indonesia.

Alongside Sigit, two of Jokowi's nephews, Bagaskara Ikhlasulla Arif and Joko Priyambodo, also hold significant positions in state-owned companies. As recently reported, Bagaskara assumed the role of Non-Government Relations Manager at the state-owned gas and oil giant Pertamina in March 2024.
