TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo paid a working visit to Surabaya, East Java today, September 6, 2024, and took the opportunity to bid farewell to the local community as his second term in office is nearing its end.
While visiting Soponyono Rungkut Market at 9:00 a.m. local time, he greeted and interacted with the traders and buyers. He confirmed that he used the occasion to say goodbye.
“As I meet with the people, I’m saying goodbye. I’ll be retiring next month,” Jokowi told reporters in the traditional market.
When asked about the community's response, he said the people expressed gratitude and respect.
During his visit to the market, he asked about the prices of basic commodities, such as shallots and chilies. He also distributed cash assistance to traders and provided basic food packages both inside and outside the market.
First Lady Iriana accompanied the President on his working visit, distributing fuchsia pink bags and t-shirts to the surrounding community. The bags contained children's and baby supplies, including baby oil and powder.
President Jokowi was scheduled to visit three locations in Surabaya today. Earlier, he inaugurated the Health Ministry Hospital building. In the afternoon, he will inaugurate the Juanda Flyover in Sidoarjo.
