TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has urged the public to be aware of the three leading causes of death in Indonesia. He emphasized that the government will continue efforts to improve public health services and ensure the well-being of the population.
“The highest causes of death in our country are stroke, heart attack, and cancer,” he said during the inauguration of the Health Ministry Hospital Building in Surabaya, East Java, on September 6, 2024, as quoted from the video statement.
He noted that East Java ranks third behind Yogyakarta and Central Java in terms of susceptibility to these diseases. He stressed the importance of taking precautions to prevent these health issues.
The construction of the new hospital building in Surabaya, the President said, is a significant step towards enhancing healthcare services in the region. The government has expanded the hospital's capacity by adding 867 beds, funded by a budget of Rp1.6 trillion. Additionally, Rp368 billion has been allocated for new equipment, and Rp50 billion for human resources.
Jokowi expressed hope that these improvements in public health services will encourage residents to seek treatment within Indonesia rather than seeking medical care abroad. “The government has no problem spending the budget as long as the health services are improved,” he said.
