TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government through the Industry Ministry discussed strategic measures to curtail carbon emissions in the industrial sector at the Forging Smart and Sustainable Industry Forum, which is part of the prestigious global trade fair, Hannover Messe 2024 in Germany.

Speaking at the forum in Jakarta on April 25, Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita underscored the government's commitment to promoting the transformation of the linear economy into a circular economy in the manufacturing sector.

This is crucial to ensuring the sustainability of resources, regenerating raw material sources, and exploring untapped economic potential. To achieve this, the government intends to leverage industrial raw material consumption in an environmentally friendly manner.

“When others see residuals as a nuisance or a challenge, we see them as an opportunity. That is why one of our focuses is to reduce the gap between the capacity of the recycling industry and the recycled plastic waste,” Agus said.

According to him, the business forum in this prestigious event, which takes place from April 22 to 26, is a result of the collaboration between the Industry Ministry and the Energy Academy Indonesia (ECADIN), which brought together industry stakeholders, government officials, academics, and the general public.

The minister highlighted that the industrial sector is among the largest contributors to carbon emissions, necessitating the implementation of Indonesia's energy transition policy that prioritizes low-carbon energy sources and technologies to reduce emissions from this sector.

The Industry Minister also witnessed the signing of several memorandums of understanding (MoUs) at the opening of the Indonesia Pavilion at Hannover Messe 2024. One of them was the investment of more than Rp 5 trillion in the waste recycling sector for industrial areas in Riau Islands.
