Jokowi Says OECD Membership Will Open Access to Investment

14 May 2024 15:55 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaIndonesian President Joko Jokowi Widodo pinned hopes that Indonesia will soon be accepted as a member of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). He expected that this membership would bring about many benefits for the society.

“Because this is an organization for developed countries, and we hope that by being a member, it will be easy to access investments and international institutions that will be advantageous to our society,” he said in a press statement after visiting the Konawe Hospital in Konawe Regency, Southeast Sulawesi Province on Tuesday, May 14.

Jokowi also believed that being an OECD member is crucial in helping Indonesia avoid the middle-income trap. “There are many rules that we have to follow, and this will discipline us to achieve our goal of becoming a developed nation,” he remarked.

The OECD Council has decided to initiate accession discussions with Indonesia on February 20, 2024, following an assessment by the members based on its evidence-based Framework for the Consideration of Prospective Members. The decision also followed years of increased engagement and cooperation with Indonesia as an OECD Key Partner country since 2007.

On May 11, Indonesian Coordinating Minister for the Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto claimed that 38 OECD member countries have approved Indonesia's application to become a member of the organization.
