TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - On the occasion of Kartini Day this year, President Joko Widodo or Jokowi invited all parties to make Kartini Day a symbol of women's struggle for leadership and strength. President Jokowi expressed this via his official social media account.

"Let us make Kartini Day not just a ceremony, but a symbol of women's struggle for leadership and the power they have," wrote Jokowi in an Instagram video caption, Sunday, April 21, 2024.

President Jokowi also said that Kartini Day was a reminder of women's long journey in finding equality. In closing, President Jokowi conveyed Happy Kartini Day to all Indonesian women.

In his upload the President included a video of the process of making the Kartini illustration accompanied by the song Ibu Kita Kartini created by Wage Rudolf Supratman.

Kartini Day is known to be celebrated every April 21. This refers to the Presidential Decree of the Republic of Indonesia Number 108 of 1964, issued by the first President of the Republic of Indonesia, Soekarno, which designated Kartini as a National Independence Hero and also established Kartini's birthday on April 21 as a big day which later became known as Kartini Day.

In the comments column of President Jokowi's upload, a number of netizens wished women a Happy Kartini Day. And other netizens said that Kartini Day coincided with their birthday. "Mr. Jokowi, it's my birthday today, sir," said a netizen. "Happy Kartini Day, sir, it's my birthday today," wrote another netizen.
