TEMPO.CO, Lumajang - Cold lava flows from Mount Semeru damaged several bridges and killed a couple who were passing by on a motorcycle on Thursday evening, April 18, 2024. They were residents of Jurang Jejer Hamlet, Klopo Sawit Village, Candipuro District.

“[The bodies] were discovered by residents this morning. The victims died,” said Adj. Comr. Lugito, chief of Lumajang Candipuro Sector Police on Friday, April 19, 2024.

The motorcycle they were riding was found crushed in the river. Tempo gathered information that they were returning home from Munder Village, Yosowilangun District when the tragedy occurred.

The damage caused by the cold lava flood and landslides that followed the Semeru volcano eruption resulted in significant material losses, including damage to at least four bridges in Lumajang Regency, one of which was in Kloposawit Village.

Patria Dwi Hastiadi, head of the Lumajang Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), said that the agency was still conducting an assessment of the flooding and landslides in the region.

“The Lumajang BPBD’s Rapid Response Team and a joint team were immediately deployed to the site to carry out an assessment and expedite the handling of the cold lava flood,” Patria told Tempo this morning, April 19.
