Halmahera's Mount Dukono Erupts Twice, Volcanic Alert at Level II

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Mount Dukono monitoring and observation post in North Halmahera, North Maluku asked residents to avoid the volcano’s crater within a radius of 3 kilometers. The warning was announced after the post recorded two eruptions at Mount Dukono which emitted white and gray smoke at 600 meters height. Mount Dukono’s alert level remains at Level II.
According to Dukono Volcano Observation Post officer Bambang Sugiono, the weather around the volcano is cloudy, with air temperature ranging from 25 to 30 degrees Celsius with a humidity level of 83 to 84 percent. Visually, the mountain is mostly covered in fog, but smoke can be seen leaning towards the south.
Meanwhile, seismicity-wise, Mount Dukono experienced 2 eruptions with an amplitude of 4-20 millimeters with a duration of 36.49-39.37 seconds with a deep volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 5 millimeters with a duration of 25.44 seconds, as well as 2 local tectonic earthquakes with an amplitude of 5-14 millimeters with a duration of 27.33-34.56. second. There were also 11 far tectonic earthquakes with an amplitude of 4-34 millimeters with a duration of 56.93-116.29 seconds.
"So, considering there were eruptions and the spread of volcanic ash, we recommend that people around Mount Dukono always provide masks and nose coverings," said Bambang in his report received by Tempo on Tuesday, May 7, 2024.
Mount Dukono is one of three volcanoes on the mainland of Halmahera Island. At least 23,000 people reside in four sub-districts on the slopes of Mount Dukono. Mount Dukono previously emitted volcanic ash in February 2024.
