TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Homegrown e-commerce giant Tokopedia CEO Melissa Siska Juminto has spoken out on the issue of predatory pricing practices in e-commerce. She believed that the primary problem lies in the supply chain, rather than within the platform.

“Even if we take down the product, there are sellers outside or in offline markets [using predatory pricing]. So actually, e-commerce is just one channel,” Melissa said during a media discussion at the Tokopedia office in South Jakarta on Wednesday, April 3.

Melissa emphasized the significance of collaborations between entrepreneurs, customs, and related ministries to solve the predatory pricing practices in the country.

Regarding products sold at very low prices on Shop Tokopedia, formerly known as TikTok Shop, she claimed that these products are usually under promotions.

She also mentioned that Tokopedia frequently provided exclusive deals to support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). “But we're not overly complacent because running any business should be rational, let alone in the current economic climate where sustainability remains a priority,” said Melissa.

As widely reported, TikTok Shop has integrated its shopping system with Tokopedia. Minister of Cooperatives and SMEs Teten Masduki advised Tokopedia to maintain business competition. “Don't let there be any more predatory pricing practices as it will harm MSMEs,” Teten said on November 28, 2023.
