TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Singapore-based e-commerce platform Shopee and Indonesia’s Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency (BPJPH) signed an agreement that will enable the popular e-commerce to open the registration of halal certification services for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) through its Shopee Barokah feature.
Handika Jahja, Executive Director of Shopee Indonesia, said the collaboration aims to advance the halal industry through e-commerce and help enforce the government's halal certification policy.
“This opens up opportunities for MSMEs to apply for halal certification easily through the Shopee seller center. Besides, we provide this facility to open access for MSMEs to obtain halal certification before it is required by the government in October 2024,” Handika said at Gama Tower in Kuningan, South Jakarta on Wednesday, April 3.
He explained that this program is a reflection of Shopee's long-term commitment to supporting MSMEs. The halal certification process will be divided into the free and paid ones. To date, at least four million MSMEs have been certified halal, 2.5 million of which are in the culinary sector.
“Through this collaboration, we present integration in the online application for applying for halal certification,” he added.
Muhammad Aqil Irham, Head of BPJPH, said that the agency allocated a quota of one million MSMEs to register for free halal certification in 2023 and 2024. However, due to the overwhelming demand, the agency collaborated with other institutions to provide the service.
“These include BSI (Indonesia Sharia Bank), Baznas (state alms agency), and Shopee. Shopee has facilitated 1,000 MSMEs to obtain halal certification, but we’ll review them first,” said Aqil.
The halal certification service on Shopee will be available starting April 3 through the Shopee Seller Center feature, which has been integrated with the BPJPH’s SIHALAL system.
