TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that no Indonesian citizens have thus far fallen victim to a powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Taiwan and Japan on Wednesday, April 3.

The seismic event was reported to be the strongest in at least 25 years and prompted a tsunami advisory for southern Japan and the Philippines, which has now been lifted.

Judha Nugraha, Director of Indonesian Citizen Protection at the Foreign Affairs Ministry, said the ministry has been in coordination with the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo, the Indonesian Consulate General in Osaka, and the Indonesian Trade and Economic Office (KDEI) in Taipei to monitor the condition of Indonesian citizens.

“So far, no Indonesian citizens have been impacted by the earthquake in Taiwan or Okinawa Prefecture, Japan,” said Foreign Affairs Ministry's spokesperson, Lalu Muhammad Iqbal, in a short message to reporters.

Taiwan's fire department reported one fatality and more than 50 people were injured at the quake’s epicenter in the sparsely populated eastern mountainous region of Hualien.

At least 26 buildings have collapsed, more than half of which are in Hualien, leaving approximately 20 individuals trapped. Rescue operations are currently ongoing.
