TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) and coach Phillipe Troussier agreed to part ways following a string of disappointing results for the Vietnam national team.

The latest was a 3-0 defeat to Indonesia on Tuesday, March 26 at the My Dinh Stadium in Hanoi in the second round of the Asian qualifying competition for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“Immediately after the second leg match between the Vietnam team and the Indonesian team, in the second qualifying round for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Asia, the VFF and head coach Philippe Troussier met to discuss the working process as head coach,” read a statement on the official website of the VFF.

The statement also said that during the meeting, the VFF or LDBDVN and head coach Philippe Troussier reached an agreement to terminate the contract as of March 26, 2024.

Troussier thanked the players, clubs, LDBDVN, and the fans for their support. He also apologized to the fans for the team's performance, which did not meet expectations.

The VFF said that Troussier had always worked with a high sense of responsibility and professionalism while leading the team. “The Vietnam Football Federation apologizes to the country's football fans because the achievements of the Vietnamese team in recent times have not met the set goals, and hopes that fans will continue to put their trust and faith in them. Support Vietnamese football in general and national football teams in particular,” the VFF’s statement concluded.

Phillipe Troussier took over as coach of the Vietnam national team in March 2023, replacing Park Hang-seo. During his time in Vietnam, the French coach led 14 matches and recorded four wins and 10 defeats.
