BMKG Detects 139 Hotspots in Sumatra, Riau Records the Most

TEMPO.CO, Pekanbaru - The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in Pekanbaru station on Wednesday, March 20, detected 139 hotspots in Sumatra Island. The most was found in Riau with 40 hotspots, followed by West Sumatra at 32 hotspots.

BMKG forecaster Putri Santy S. in Pekanbaru stated that the number of hotspots was based on the updated data at 16:00 Western Indonesia Time. In addition to Riau and West Sumatra, there are 31 hotspots in Bengkulu, 27 in Riau Islands, and six in Jambi. "There is at least one each in North Sumatra, South Sumatra, and Bangka Belitung," he said as quoted from Antara, on Wednesday, March 20.

Of the total 40 hotspots in Riau Province, 20 were found in Pelalawan Regency. In the region, the hotspots were found in Teluk Meranti and Kuala Kampar Subdistricts.

Other hotspots in Riau were found in Indragiri Hulu Regency (6 spots), Siak (5), Dumai City (4), and Meranti Islands (3), and the rest were found each in Kuantan Singingi and Rokan Hilir regencies.

Riau acting Governor SF Hariyanto previously set a wildfire emergency alert status from March 13 to November 30.

"Riau set the emergency alert status following the Dumai City and Bengkalis Regency that have earlier set the same status," said Riau acting head of disaster mitigation agency (BPBD) M. Edy Afrizal.
