TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chairperson of the General Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu), Rahmat Bagja, said on Monday that the Integrated Law Enforcement Center (Gakkumdu) is investigating the alleged practice of buying and selling Indonesian election ballots in Malaysia.

However, Bagja declined to comment further. "It is still under investigation. We cannot tell you now," he said, adding that the case started with a video circulating online.

Migrant CARE, a civil society organization focused on advocating for Indonesian migrant worker issues, earlier reported the case to Bawaslu.

Migrant CARE staffer Muhammad Santosa said on February 20 that brokers sold election ballots they took from mailboxes in apartments in Malaysia, where Indonesian citizens live, taking advantage of their ignorance.

"They deliberately searched mailboxes and collected ballots, putting them together in one place," he added.

The alleged sale price of these ballots is between 25 and 50 Malaysian ringgit (around US$5.23–10.47) and was targeted at candidates in the February 14 Indonesian general elections.
