TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo on Thursday inaugurated the Losari Centralized Domestic Wastewater Management System (SPAL-DT) in Makassar City, South Sulawesi. The president emphasized the importance of this device for managing liquid waste so that it is environmentally friendly.

"[This is also important] to improve the quality of groundwater and raw water as well as improve the quality of people's health," Jokowi said in his remarks as quoted from the Presidential Secretariat Press Bureau on February 22.

The SPAL-DT Losari was built from 2019 to 2023 with a cost of Rp1.2 trillion. The system has a capacity of 16,000 cubic meters per day with a wastewater pipe network spanning 96 kilometers. The government estimates that the system can serve 41,000 families.

Jokowi hopes that SPAL-DT can increase public awareness of environmental pollution problems in Makassar City. The President asked to ensure that the SPAL-DT's operation will make waste water management in Makassar City more integrated.

Accompanying the President at the inauguration were SOE Minister Erick Thohir, Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono, South Sulawesi's acting Governor Bahtiar Baharuddin, and Makassar Mayor Mohammad Ramdhan Pomanto.
