TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Central Java is among the regions with the potential for heavy rain with lightning and strong winds today, Wednesday, February 7, 2024. Several heavy flooding has hit a number of areas in the province on Monday and Tuesday after persistent downpours for three consecutive days.

According to BMKG (Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency), the heavy rain potential would occur in the mountainous area, and the western to the central area of the northern coastal area (pantura). The rain would fall "in the afternoon - evening", the agency forecasted.

A researcher of climatology at the Climate and Atmosphere Research Center of BRIN, Erma Yulihastin, revealed a similar rain pattern in Jakarta, Gresik (East Java), and two Central Java regencies; Pati and Rembang.

The pattern shows an extreme spike during the first decade of February. "Meaning, the extreme weather originates in the Java Sea since those regions are all located on the northern coast of Java," she posted on social media.

According to the early warning released by BMKG, what happens in the Java Sea occurs due to a confluence that increases surrounding cloud formations. In addition to the Java Sea, BMKG also records confluence in the Flores Sea and Banda Sea.
