TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Joko Widodo or Jokowi welcomed VinFast, Vietnam’s electric vehicle manufacturer, that planned to invest in the country. He made the statement during a meeting with the company’s chairman Pham Nhat Vuong at the VinFast headquarters in Hai Phong, on Saturday, January 13.

“We fully support VinFast's investment plans in Indonesia. If there are any issues related to permits, you can contact the ministers,” the President said as quoted from the Cabinet Secretariat’s website.

After the meeting, he visited VinFast’s electric car factory and expressed a good impression. He hoped that VinFast could boost the development of Indonesia’s EV ecosystem and its integration with the electric battery industry. “We hope that this ecosystem can be established soon.”

During his visit, the President observed various stages of the electric car assembly process, including battery installation, and tried sitting behind the wheel of the VinFast electric car.

Indonesian officials accompanying President Jokowi during the visit to Vietnam include Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi, SOE Minister Erick Thohir, Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, and officials and ambassadors to Vietnam.
